UT emeritus professor to offer piano lecture, masterclass at WC
Pianist Sophia Gilmson will host a guest artist lecture and masterclass in the Alkek
Fine Arts Center at 7 p.m. Monday, March 21.
Gilmson is an emeritus professor of piano pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin Butler School of Music. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including first prize in the Young Artists Competition in New York City, the prestigious Mount Everest Award from the Austin Critics Table in 2001 and an array of excellence in teaching awards.
“My main goal as a teacher is to make my students independent,” Gilmson said. “Instead of telling them what to do, I want to teach them how to think independently and find their own answers and solutions.
“My lecture and masterclass will focus on cultivating and nurturing intelligent musical thinking that ultimately leads to a free and artistic performance. I am grateful for the opportunity for us to be together united by the timeless beauty of classical music.”
