Name: Shelby Key
Course of Study: Nursing
Are you a scholarship recipient? I received the Michael Feely Memorial Scholarship.
What is the best part of attending WC? The best part is the small classes. I feel like everyone gets to know their classmates and can form great friendships that last a lifetime. I have made many friendships from getting the opportunity to get to know my classmates.
What are your post-WC plans? My post-WC plan is to attend the University of Texas at Arlington to get my Bachelors of Science in Nursing and start working in the ER at Plaza Medical Center where I currently work.
What are your favorite things to do when you are not at school or studying? I really enjoy going bowling. This is one of my favorite things to do because I am a competitive person and I love being able to just go out and have fun when I do have free time from studying.
What is your dream job? My dream job would be to work at a level 1 trauma emergency room as a nurse practitioner.
Who has been your greatest hero/mentor? Why? My anatomy and physiology teacher Dr. Ibe has to be my greatest mentor. He taught me so much over the course of my year in A&P, and that is something I will carry with me my whole life. He taught me how to learn and study. He taught me how to use my mind and gave me the confidence that I could be successful in the classroom and in my career as a nurse.
What is your favorite book? “The Last Lecture,” by Randy Pausch
How important was the proximity of WC to your home when choosing to attend? This was very important to me. I did go to Texas Tech for a year and realized that Weatherford College was were I was supposed to be. I came back and started back at Weatherford College because it was close to home, and I was able to get a steady job that I could work at for many years.
How important was affordability when choosing to attend WC? This was also a very important thing to me being that I pay out of pocket for my school. I needed something that was going to be affordable and not put me in a financial bind. I believe that Weatherford College is well priced and affordable for students who don’t have opportunities to get financial aid or scholarships. I feel like they help students as much as possible to afford to go to college like offering payment plans.
How would you describe the campus life experience you’ve had at WC? The campus life is great. You always see students hanging outside and studying. You don’t hear about any problems that correlate on campus and I always feel safe when I do I come to campus.
How would you describe the quality of education you have received at WC? The quality of the education I have received has been more than exceptional. I receive compliments from coworkers and clinical settings that we have been taught very well in our program.
How would you describe the individual attention you have received at WC? Being that the classes are smaller, the individual attention that I receive at WC is amazing. I have more time with the teachers one-on-one, and they are always open to help at my convenience. The teachers are always offering to give more help outside if the classroom.
What is your expectation of your ability to make living based off of your WC education? My expectation is that I can use my education to be successful in life and to live comfortably. I want the hard work that I have put in to my education to pay off where I can have my dream job and live the life I dream of.
