WC Spotlight - Sarah Beth Nelson

Name:  Sarah Beth Nelson

Course of study:  Paramedic

NOTE:  Sarah has also received her Associate of Science degree from WC, and she is a graduate of the WC Regional Fire Academy.

Hometown:  Tolar

What prompted you to choose your current course of study?  My dad has been a firefighter/paramedic in Abilene for almost 20 years, and he's always inspired me to do great things with my life like he did.

What is the best part of attending WC?  I would say the best part is the instructors we have in the Public Safely Professions. They're not just here to teach you how to pass the test, but they truly want you to be able to function in the field and be the best that you can.

What are your post-WC plans?  To test at as many fire departments as I can and continue to learn as much as I can about both the fire side and the medical side.

What are your favorite things to do when you are not at school or studying?  I've always enjoyed working out, and I really love to be outside fishing, riding motorcycles or just being with family.

What is your dream job?  My Dream job would definitely be a position at a fire department.  I want nothing more than to be a firefighter.

Who has been your greatest hero/mentor? Why?  My greatest hero and mentor is my dad.  He taught me discipline and self-motivation early on in life. He's always been tough on me, but it's because he knew I could handle it. He believes I'm capable of anything.

How important was the proximity of WC to your home when choosing to attend?  Pretty important. I only drive about 30 minutes from Granbury where I live, so that was very convenient for me.

How important was affordability when choosing to attend WC?  This was a big part because I knew I wouldn't be able to work and have adequate amount of time to study,  but WC has reasonable prices. Even if it were more expensive, I would still attend just because WC has the Public Safety Programs.

How would you describe the campus life experience youve had at WC?  It’s been enjoyable. I'll definitely miss it when it's all over.

What is your expectation of your ability to make living based off of your WC education?  With my associates, fire certification and EMS certifications, I believe I will live a very comfortable life going into the field I'm choosing.  I have no worries for the future, just excitement.
