The Zonta Club of Parker County, Michael Feely Memorial and McFarland Fund
Name: Samantha Peairson
How long have you been a WC student? Since August 2015.
Course of study: ADN
What prompted you to choose your current course of study? Nursing is the first step to reaching my ultimate goal of becoming a lactation consultant. I decided to pursue a career as a lactation consultant to help mothers and newborns struggling, but, also, to be able to provide a better life for my family.
How does this scholarship help you in your pursuit of a higher education? We are a super low income family of (soon to be) five. My husband is the only one working at the moment, so that I can pursue an education and take care of the children. This scholarship helps to take the financial burden of school off of our shoulders, and I am so very thankful to the wonderful donors who make this possible.
What is the best part of attending WC? Being taught by instructors who truly want to see their students succeed. It is also close to my home and the classes work well with my husband’s work schedule.
Are you involved with any WC clubs or organizations? If yes, which ones and why? I am involved with Phi Theta Kappa, I initially joined because my grades reflect my commitment to school and I like to help people, but now I enjoy being part of the group because they treat members like family and help each other succeed to the best of their power. I am also part of
the Student Nurse’s Association because it helps to give access to nursing journals and other opportunities within the nursing world.
What are your post-WC plans? I hope to work in a Labor and Delivery department while pursuing my BSN, and then continuing on to become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.

What are your favorite things to do when you are not at school or studying? I enjoy playing with my 4-year-old and 2-year-old and spending as much time as possible with my husband. I also enjoy reading books, playing video games and just relaxing at home.
What is your dream job? To work independently as a lactation consultant to help women whenever they need it and on my own schedule.
Who has been your greatest mentor? Honestly, it is probably super cliché and sappy. My husband, Jeff, has been my greatest mentor and motivator. He has encouraged me since I chose to return to school. He pushes me when I need it and talks me out of my times of emotional distress. He works hard to provide for our family while encouraging me to follow my dreams. He takes care of the children while I am at school, so they do not have to attend a daycare. He does all this, and still helps me with the house, goes to appointments with me and helps me with grocery shopping. If it wasn’t for this man, I would not still be in school.
What is your favorite movie? “The Princess Bride” (I enjoy the book as well).
What has been your favorite course at WC? My favorite course, so far, is microbiology. We spent lab time doing bacteria smears and learning about different types of bacteria. I have always enjoyed science, and it was fun working in an actual lab setting.
How would you describe the quality of education you have received at WC? The instructors at WC are knowledgeable and pass that knowledge on in an easy way to understand. Each instructor that I have had, invests time in their students and seem to want them to achieve their goals. It is refreshing to learn all this new information from instructors who are passionate about what they do.
