WC Spotlight - Nancy McVean

WC Spotlight - Nancy McVeanNancy McVean, Weatherford College drama instructor, was announced as the 2017 Faculty Member of the Year during this past weekend’s commencement ceremony.

McVean was not able to attend the ceremony due to a previously planned trip, but left a statement to be read in case she was selected the recipient of the award.

“With all my heart I regret not being here for this once in a lifetime honor,” she wrote. “I accept this award on behalf of the amazing, talented students that have worked magic on our stage throughout the years. It truly wouldn’t have happened without them by my side. One of the joys of my life has been to see them accomplish so much and go from her to be successful, contributing human beings.”

McVean is retiring from Weatherford College in August after 38 years at the helm of the drama program.

Dr. Alexander Ibe, the 2016 Faculty Member of the Year, presented McVean as the winner while pointing out her passion for the environment and animals. She worked to bring the first recycling bins to campus and regularly asked for donations of animal food to benefit the local shelter during her fine arts productions.

“There has never been a dull moment for this faculty member,” Ibe said quoting Fine Arts Department Chair Cal Lewiston during the announcement. “She has a way to light the fire, motivate, encourage and inspire her students.”

McVean has served the college on the Faculty Senate and sponsored college events for students and employees including organizing trips to New York City.

“Nancy is like no other,” Ibe said. “She is an ‘institution’ and has served with great distinction for decades.”

The title of Faculty Member of the Year comes with airfare for two to the U.S. destination of her choice and the $1,000 Gayle and Wanda Grant Award of Teaching Excellence, both provided by the Weatherford College Foundation.
