WC Spotlight - Melanie LaBrake

Name:  Melanie LaBrake

Course of study:  Psychology

Hometown:  Weatherford

What is the best part of attending WC?  The best part of attending Weatherford College for me was the support the teachers offer. The staff and faculty really want you to receive the best education possible.

What are your post-WC plans?  My post-WC plans are to continue my studies at Tarleton and two more classes at Weatherford since they are transferrable and cost less. I am going for my Bachelor’s in Science.

What are your favorite things to do when you are not at school or studying?  My favorite things to do when I am not taking classes is to run 5k to 10ks and ride my mountain bike. Also I enjoy spending time with my three children, fiancé and friends.

What is your dream job?  My dream job will be when I can work for the VA, since I am a veteran. I want to help my fellow brothers and sisters live better and more a part of the next steps to get there.

Who has been your greatest hero/mentor?  My greatest mentor has been my father. He has always encouraged and sacrificed for me in hopes of having a better life and happiness. Dr. Stamatis was and still is my hero. She has accomplished so much as a woman, and I admire her ability to sustain her family and hundreds of students. She is definitely an amazing instructor, very supportive and responsive.

What is your favorite book?  My favorite book is Clan of the Cave bears.

How important was affordability when choosing to attend WC?  I believe it’s smarter to get your basics or associates degree from a community college first. It saves students thousands of dollars. This is why I choose WC.

How would you describe the quality of education you have received at WC?  I feel the education a person receives is due mostly to how much time they invest in it. Personally I have received a great amount of knowledge and can definitely use this while dialoguing with people I meet throughout my life.
