High School: Decatur High School

Hometown: Weatherford

Why did you choose Weatherford College?  I originally decided to attend Weatherford College due to its close proximity to my home, giving me the chance to continue my part-time job. I soon realized there is more to this college than its relative closeness. Financially, this was the right school for me. I have limited aid from my family members, and the cost of Weatherford College was definitely appealing. More importantly, this school has stronger learning opportunities than other schools. After touring and being able to communicate with other students I quickly learned that this was the college for me. Smaller class sizes mean that professors can actually speak to me directly in a crowd of twenty to thirty vs a much larger class where I could potentially not receive any close guidance.

The professors here have more time to speak with their students and are pleased to do so. This is what I have experienced so far here at Weatherford College. Originally Weatherford was my choice because of my financial status and how close it was, but I have recently moved to Weatherford to attend the ADN (Associates Degree in Nursing) program. Now Weatherford is my choice because it has become my home. The staff is helpful regardless of whether or not they know you. The professors love to see their students succeed and they thrive on our achievement.

What field are you interested in pursuing after graduation?  I am currently studying diligently to be a Registered Nurse. I am very excited about my career choice. Originally, I wanted to become a radiographic technician, I had applied after my second semester and I was not accepted. I was so devastated; I thought I had done everything right, Straight As in all but one course, but I am now very happy that I had not been accepted. It was sort of a blessing in disguise. I had always wanted to be a nurse, but my younger self had doubted I could do well. Through that small failure of not being accepted into the other program, I grew significantly. I worked harder for one more semester and then I was accepted into the ADN program. Being an RN will give me much more opportunities to grow within the healthcare field. There are several areas I can flourish in. I have taken more of an interest in becoming an operating room nurse, and maybe even a pediatric nurse. After having started my career, I would love to go back to school and earn my Bachelor's of Science in Nursing degree to become more marketable and possibly choose another area of specialty in nursing. However, my end goal would be to become a Nurse Practitioner. Nursing is my passion, it has become a big part of my life in this short period of time.

How is your scholarship going to impact your life?  I have limited aid through my parents. This scholarship will take a large weight off of my shoulders. I will not have to worry when and how I will pay off my college expenses or if I will even be able to attend next semester. With this scholarship, my mind is put at ease, and I can focus on my studies instead of my financial situation. The Nursing Program here at Weatherford College is more expensive than regular tuition, and this scholarship will help cut costs. I was already struggling with normal tuition rates, and now it has become even more difficult. This scholarship means I can do something for myself right now (obtaining my education), and in doing so, I can help thousands by becoming a nurse.
