WC Spotlight - Catherine Matthews

Cathering MatthewsName: Catherine Matthews

Course of study: Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Hometown: Granbury

What is the best part of attending WC?  In the sonography program, the professors make you feel more like a family than just their students. They really care about our future and well-being. Knowing the staff at WC has your back really makes a tremendous difference in your level of education and confidence.

What are your post-WC plans?  I intend to pursue my career as a sonographer. I hope I am fortunate enough to follow what I initially wanted to do and work in either an Ob/Gyn office or Pediatrics. I then plan on continuing my education to obtain my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Health Administration.

What are your favorite things to do when you are not at school or studying?  When I am not busy with the intense work-load that comes with the program, I enjoy working out. It relieves stress, as well as keeps me fit and active.

What is your dream job?  My dream job would be doing something that I love and never get worn out from; helping people, being social and always experiencing something new. If you love what you do, then you never work a day in your life.

Who has been your greatest hero/mentor? Why?  My greatest hero is and will always be a very close family friend that I loved like a brother, Briggs Berry. At a very young age, he was diagnosed with a life threatening syndrome and Briggs never let it discourage him. In the 18 years he was with us, he influenced more people than most will do in a full lifetime. Briggs taught me how to never let anything bring you down no matter how big and to always look at the bright side. Even though Briggs lost his battle, he was the biggest winner because of the lives he altered. People learned through him that life is too short and not to take life for granted.

How important was affordability when choosing to attend WC?  Affordability was one of the most important factors considering the amount of debt most students will be in when they graduate. A top notch education and a less expensive tuition should always be top priority when thinking about your future.

How would you describe the quality of education you have received at WC?  The professors in the program come from all different sonography career backgrounds. This range of experience gives us students different outlooks and a broader spectrum for our future. I could not ask for more knowledgeable and caring professors to guide me through this program.
