The Weatherford College Jazz Band, founded by Duane Durrett in 1975, and currently directed by Fredrick Sanders, boasts a long-standing tradition of excellence. Recipient of numerous awards and accolades at collegiate and international jazz festivals, including top honors at the Kansas City Jazz Festival and an invitational performance at the Montreaux International Jazz Festival, recent students include Grammy Award winner, Snarky Puppy members, drummer Robert “Sput” Searight, and keyboardist Shaun Martin. Aden Bubeck, who performs with frequent CMA and Grammy winner Miranda Lambert, not only attended WC and played in the WC Jazz Band, but he also taught bass guitar at WC until Ms. Lambert hired him away!
Other students who have gone on to perform with the likes of The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Ray Charles, Betty Carter, Toby Keith, B.B. King, Kirk Franklin, Luther Vandross, The Winans and the World Saxophone Quartet, include Efrem Windom, Keith Loftis, Andre Hayward, Keith Anderson, Fredrick Sanders, Gaika James and Willie Roy. Many teach in public and private schools, such as Aledo’s own Hans Grim, choral director at Northside High School in Fort Worth. Hans also performs professionally as a busy piano accompanist.
