WC Jazz Concert to feature Classic Dixieland Band

What's on your Bucket List?

Jim Milan’s Bucket List Jazz Band is the featured guest at the Weatherford College Jazz Band spring concert this Thursday, April 30.

The concert – What’s On Your Bucket List? – begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Alkek Fine Arts Center. Doors open at 7 p.m. and admission is free.

Milan, age 93, is a life-long lover of jazz. After hearing a record of classic Dixieland jazz in the 1950s by Matty Matlock he had it in his mind to play those particular songs. After the Internet made it so easy to track down people, Milan was able to find the right contacts to have those particular songs arranged for his nine-man band and he was able to mark another item off his bucket list.

WC Jazz Band Director Cal Lewiston first heard the Bucket List Jazz Band play in Arlington about three years ago. Two band members are currently adjunct music instructors at WC: Jon Stone teaches saxophone and woodwinds and Richard Powell teacher piano. Former WC instructors Ron Puckett (trumpet) and Warren Dewey (drums) are also part of the band.

Curt Wilson with the Bucket List Jazz Band has arranged the traditional spiritual “Just A Closer Walk With Thee” for the WC Jazz Band to perform and featuring himself on clarinet. Wilson is a professor emeritus at TCU where he was the Director of Jazz Studies for 35 years.

The WC Jazz Band will also perform their standard mix of blues and classic big band jazz. They plan to close out the show with the Bucket List Jazz Band playing “Big Swing Face, a blues tune written in tribute to the famous big band drummer Buddy Rich.
