The public is invited to a dedication ceremony at Weatherford College celebrating the renaming of the Business Building on the Weatherford campus as the “I.B. Hand Building.” The brief ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, April 15, outside the Business Office at the north entrance of the building.
The WC Board of Trustees recently voted to name the building after Hand, a 1936 graduate of Weatherford College. As one of Weatherford’s most prominent attorneys, Hand directed millions of dollars in donations to the college.
Hand was born in 1918 in Ranger and was educated in the Weatherford ISD. After leaving WC, he earned degrees in business administration and law from the University of Texas at Austin. He was an FBI special agent and served as district attorney of Parker County before going into private practice.
He was honored with WC’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1995 and the WC Foundation’s Carlos Hartnett Award in 1998. The Weatherford Chamber of Commerce named him Outstanding Citizen in 1985. He served his community in numerous ways over the decades, including terms on the Weatherford city council and as president of the Parker County Hospital District. Hand and his wife, Helen, were married for 55 years. He died in 2003 at the age of 85.
Members of the Hand family, some from out of state, will attend the ceremony Monday.
Visitor parking is available adjacent to the Doss Student Center off Park Avenue. Campus Police will have golf carts available to shuttle to the event site. In case of rain, the ceremony will be held in Texas Hall inside the Marjorie Alkek Fine Arts Center.
