The Weatherford College Board of Trustees approved the 2016-17 budget and tax rate during a called meeting Friday afternoon.
The $54.3 million budget for the new fiscal year starting Sept. 1 was approved by a 6-0 vote with board member Joel Watson absent. The property tax rate of 12.019 cents per $100 of property evaluation was approved 5-0 with board member Dr. Luke Haynes abstaining.
The tax rate includes 11.376 cents for maintenance and operations and 0.643 cents for debt services. The total tax rate is below the effective tax rate, the rate required to bring in the same amount of tax revenue as last year, but is slightly higher than the current 11.364 cent rate.
While Haynes abstained from the vote, he made a statement commending the administration for their hard work on the budget while also recognizing concerns of local taxpayers. He said he was not opposed to the tax rate but he encouraged the administration and the board to consider budget cuts and consolidations for the 2017-18 budget year.
In other business, the board approved a resolution by the board of directors of the Parker County Appraisal District to construct an addition to the current appraisal district office at a cost not exceed $750,000.
