The Weatherford College Collegiate Future Farmers of America chapter and Agriculture Club recently participated in the Texas Collegiate FFA Convention in Fort Worth and came away with several prestigious awards.
The event was held in conjunction with the 90th Texas FFA State Convention at the Fort Worth Convention Center. Collegiate FFA is open to all colleges and universities in Texas that have agricultural programs.
Michael Hanson, a WC sophomore from Bellevue, won the Prepared Public Speaking Contest. Jess Brockman, a sophomore from Weatherford, was on the first place Quiz Bowl team where students answered questions on animal science, wildlife management, agronomy, horticulture, agricultural mechanics, agricultural economics and FFA history. Sophomore Elise Swanson, also from Weatherford, placed 3rd in job interview.
In addition to the competition, the students were exposed to industry information from keynote speakers, participated in a business session and toured Fair Park in Dallas to see the operations of the State Fair of Texas and their interactions with the community through their Horticulture and Urban Gardens Program.
WC, the first community college to attend the event in more than a decade, joined the following universities in attendance: Sam Houston State University, West Texas A&M University, Tarleton State University and Texas Tech University.
