Weatherford College student Michael Hanson won the 12th annual Joe Tison Outstanding Public Speaking Competition on March 20.

Hanson, a freshman from Bellevue, Texas, spoke about the FFA, the impact the organization has had on his life and how it led him to pursue becoming an agriculture teacher.

Jessica Holanda, an international student from Brazil, was the runner up with her speech on missionary work in the Amazon.

The annual event – named in honor of Joe Tison, former Weatherford ISD educator and superintendent, former Weatherford mayor and former interim president of WC – was hosted by the WC Fine Arts & Communication Department.

Contestants are students who are nominated by their speech instructors. The competition is judged by a three-member panel made up of volunteers from various departments of the college.
