Inaugural WC International Piano Competition winners announced

International Piano Competition winners

At the end of a long day of competition, Asana Michelle Onishi took the top prize in the collegiate division of the inaugural Weatherford College International Piano Competition held Saturday, April 27, in the Alkek Fine Arts Center.

Onishi, a student at Northwestern University in Illinois, performed a piece by Joseph Hayden and another by Robert Schumann to take top honors.

Cynthia Gu, from Southern Methodist University, took second place, and Jacob Nydegger, from the University of North Texas, was awarded third. Halle Puckett from Texas Christian University was honorable mention.

Junior division photoIn the junior division, open to those age 11-18, Perren-Luc Thiessen, age 15, from McKinney placed first, Esther Pham, age 15, from Garland took second, and Serena Chiu, age 17, from Grand Prairie and Momoko Hoffman, age 17, from Allen tied for third place.

Eric Alan Rudkevich, age 14, from Mansfield, Grace Tran, age 13, from Garland and David Choi, age 11, from Plano were honorable mentions.

“Everything from the beginning to the end was wonderfully, unbelievably, and beautifully done,” said Dr. Hyeyoung Song, the event organizer and WC’s master pianist. “The level of performances was remarkably high and we had some excellent winners in both divisions.”
