A $248,000 bequest from the Ezelle Ashworth estate to the Weatherford College Foundation has created one of WC’s larger scholarship endowments.
Ashworth attended WC in the 1920s.
“It is so refreshing when former students as well as longtime Weatherford residents use their estates to benefit future students at Weatherford College,” said Bob Glenn, WC Foundation president. “Mrs. Ashworth loved both Weatherford College and Weatherford.”
Ashworth was born in Woodville, Texas, in 1907, moving to Weatherford with her family when she was 7 months old. A graduate of Weatherford High School and WC, she was employed for many years by W.H. Bowden’s, General Dynamics, Jess Mahan Drug and several other local businesses. She spent her retirement volunteering for First Baptist Church, the Eastern Star and the Weatherford Organ Club. She passed away in 2005.
In her estate, Ashworth provided annual distributions to the WC Foundation for scholarships as well as donations to the American Heart Association and the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. Lump sum contributions to the three non-profits were finalized this year.
“A special thanks to Richard Rockwell, who as administrator, cared for the assets of her estate and distributed the funds according to her wishes,” Glenn said. “Mrs. Ashworth’s memory will live on for decades in this community.”
