Saturday night wraps up the month with the WC Jazz Band Alumni Concert featuring current WC musicians along with alumni from previous decades.
Since the 1970s, the WC Jazz Band has been a recognized program for developing young talent. The program, under former directors Duane Durrett and Tom Burchill and current director Cal Lewiston, is a training ground for young jazz students, many of whom have gone on to professional careers in music. All three directors will lead part of concert this Saturday.
WC Jazz Band students have made appearances at concert venues, festivals and contests across the United States, and the band was selected to appear in concert at the 1987 Montreux (Switzerland) Jazz Festival with jazz great and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and his All-Star Orchestra. Many of these former students are expected to return for this concert and reunion.
Former WC jazz students have worked with Ray Charles, Snarky Puppy, Miranda Lambert, Ray Price, Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Frank Foster, Toby Keith, Erykak Badu, God’s Property, Little Big Town, Roy Hargrove, and the list goes on.
