Respiratory Care

The Respiratory Care Program at Weatherford College is a two-year curriculum comprised of classroom, laboratory, and clinical learning experiences. The course of study is comprised of 70 semester credit hours and is designed to prepare individuals for an allied health specialty that cares for patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The following are application requirements to the Respiratory Care program, which is a separate procedure from application and admission to Weatherford College. Admission to Weatherford College does not ensure admission into the Respiratory Care program. Only those students who have been admitted to the program may enroll in the Respiratory Care courses. The Respiratory Care program admits one class each year (approximately 24 students). Admission into the program is very competitive. Application requirements include the following criteria:
- Submit Weatherford College application and official transcripts to the Office of Student Affairs
- Evidence of successful completion (passed all sections) of the TASP/THEA or evidence of being exempt
- Submit Allied Health application with copies of transcripts from all colleges attended to the Allied Health Office, Office C. Only completed applications along with transcripts will be accepted. Applications are accepted the first Monday of December through the last business day of February each year.
- Proof of or Dept. of State Health Services waiver for Hepatitis B vaccine (three dose series) - for more information, please refer to Immunization and Criminal History Procedure at www.wc.edu -> Prospective Students -> Academic/Programs -> Health Professions.
After submission of application and transcripts as a candidate for the program, the student must begin their Hepatitis B series and submit proof of the first shot or a positive titer to the Allied Health Office by the last business day of March. This is a 4 - 6 month process and must be completed prior to the fall semester. (See Hepatitis B information sheet) Failure to meet application requirements will result in denial of application.
Applicant must have successfully completed BIOL 2401 and BIOL 2402 (Anatomy and Physiology I and II) Science courses must have been taken within five years prior to admission. Applications may be downloaded from our program web page.

Once selected for admission to the program, the student MUST:
- Complete a criminal background check
- Obtain a TB screen test or chest x-ray (current within one year), a urine drug screen, MMR titers and a back/spine examination
- Up-to-date immunizations including DT (within the last ten years) and Varicella, and completion of Hepatitis B series
- Submit proof of major medical health insurance
- Provide proof of current AHA Health Care Provider CPR
Information on methods of obtaining the above criteria will be available to the student upon acceptance to the program.
Start-up costs for immunizations, titers, urine drug screen, CPR, back/spine screen, and health insurance varies but could run as much as $400. Criminal history/background check is $20.00. Please see the cost estimate page of the information packet for Weatherford College program costs.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The demand for respiratory therapists is expected to increase. As of December 2005, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics projects "employment of respiratory therapist to increase faster than average (18%-26%) compared to other occupations through the year 2014."
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, AND REGISTRY
All graduates must obtain a license from the Texas Department of State Health Services. This is a requirement to practice respiratory care in the state. A graduate of this program is eligible to take the CRT, (Certified Respiratory Therapist) entry-level exam along with the following exams - RRT, CPFT, RPFT, and the Perinatal/Pediatric Specialty.
ENGLISH PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
Before being accepted into the Respiratory Care Program an applicant who's native language* is not English must submit an acceptable score on the Test of Spoken English (TSE). Additional information may be obtained from the Allied Health Department. *A native language is a language that is acquired naturally during childhood & is usually spoken at home, as opposed to a language that is learned later in life, for example, as a part of a person's formal education.
SELECTION CRITERIA
There are 2 prerequisite courses and 7 general requirement courses in this program.
The prerequisite and general requirement courses will be scored as follows:
A = 4 points
B = 3 points
C = 2 points
An applicant can receive a maximum of 36 points in this area.
Points awarded for a previous degree: Master's = 8 points Bachelor's = 6 points Associate's = 4 points
It is recommended that all general course work be completed prior to entering the Respiratory Care program.
