More than 460 runners braved early morning drizzle and nippy weather and made this year's annual Weatherford College Coyote Chase Race another success Nov. 21. It was the 15th year for the event, and organizers were excited with the turnout.
Right in the middle, Jackson Langat, a native of Kenya, a five-time All-American track athlete from TCU, ran with the school children, encouraging them to keep active.
"Even with the drizzle right at first, it seemed like everyone had a great time," said Brent Baker, WC vice president of institutional advancement and director of the annual fundraiser for the WC Foundation. "We really appreciate the continued support from the community and schools, especially." The School Challenge, in which area elementary and middle school/junior high schools compete, was won, once again, by Mary Martin Elementary of the Weatherford ISD, which brought about 100 runners. Angel Soriano of Weatherford won the Men's Overall with a time of 16.04 in the 5K and Tara McCall of Weatherford won the Women's Overall with a time of 20.03. The Men and Women Master's Overall for those 40 and over were won by David Holtsford of Lipan, 18.19, and Merry Wolf of Windthorst, with a time of 21.13.
Merry Wolf of Windthorst the Female Masters category with a time of 21.13. The Masters category is for runners age 40 and over.
Trophies were provided, once again, by First Financial Bank. An extra treat for the participants, particularly the kids, was the special appearance by five-time All American track star, Jackson Langat. A graduate of Texas Christian University, Langat, a native of Kenya, holds seven NCAA titles. He is now a representative for the Fort Worth Marathon and participates in as many local runs as possible, encouraging children to stay active. "Of course, I encourage them to run, but any activity that keeps them off the couch and active is good and what I tell them," Langat said. "It takes a lot of people to put together something like this race, so I want to give a special thanks to all the volunteers, businesses, schools and runners for making it happen," said Baker.
David Holtsford of Lipan won the Male Masters category with a time of 18.19.
Angel Soriano and Tara McCall, both of Weatherford, took home the trophies for the 5K Overall Men's and Women's Champion in the Nov. 21 Coyote Chase Race at Weatherford College.
Some students from Mary Martin Elementary School waited out the cold to pose with the School Challenge trophy, as the school took home the trophy for the most participants for the sixth year.
