WC hosts 10th annual Math Competition

Approximately 100 students from 11 area high schools put their mathematics skills on display Friday in the 10th annual Weatherford College Coyote Area Black and Gold Math Championship. Hosted by the WC Mathematics Department, the event’s theme was “Mathematics and Technology – Shaping Our World.”

Each high school entered two teams, one in the Black Division and one in the Gold Division. Competi-
tion in the Black Division included questions from calculus, algebra, geometry, mathematical reasoning, and trigonometry. Questions for the Gold Division teams came from algebra, mathematical reasoning, and geometry.

Participating high schools included Chico, Graham, Huckabay, Lancaster, Mineral Wells, Peaster, Poolville, St. Peters Classical School, Stephenville, Weatherford, and Weatherford Christian School.

Participating students also heard a presentation entitled “Applications of Particle Accelerators in
Modern Society” by Dr. Daniel K. Marble from Tarleton State University’s Department of Physics and Engineering.

“It’s great to see so many local students interested in mathematics,” said WC’s Grace Rothrock, event chair. “It’s important to celebrate these students’ achievements and encourage them to continue in their math studies. We appreciate all of the schools and our many volunteers for their assistance.”

The event was again sponsored by Plains Capital Bank in Weatherford, and the bank’s Bob Glenn,
a WC alumnus himself, joined the group in the closing presentation.
