WC Board gives go-ahead on Academic building, handles routine matters
At its regular November meeting Thursday, the Weatherford College Board of Trustees discussed at length the construction time frame for the new academic building to be built on the Weatherford Campus. Trustees ultimately approved the general contractor’s Guaranteed Maximum Price proposal of $6,999,612. Including architectural fees, testing and furniture/fixtures/equipment, the total cost of the building will be approximately $9 million, funded out of College reserves.
Frank Martin, board chairman, stipulated that the proposal was subject to “the establishment of a mutually agreed upon completion date.” The proposal includes a provision for construction, beginning to end, of 305 days, and Martin felt it was critical to establish the exact beginning date. The GMP provides a payment of $2,500 per calendar day to the College for failure to complete the work within the con-
tracted time.
“Our company is committed to completion by the first of August,” said Brian Miller of Hill & Wilkinson General Contractors. “Definitely in time for the College to move in and be ready for fall classes next year.”
The project is well under budget, said Dr. Kevin Eaton, WC president. “We’re in good shape. We are right at $200 per square foot, including construction, furniture and fixtures. Everything we need for a fully-functional classroom and lab building.”
The 40,600-square-foot structure will be located west of the Doss Student Center and south of the Allied Health Building. The structure will house 10 classrooms, two lecture halls, eight laboratories, 11 faculty offices and a learning center.
Additionally, the board:
1. Authorized change orders for necessary alterations on the softball field currently under
construction and for the ongoing roofing and mansard project, which is nearing completion;
2. Approved the appointment of several new employees: Cindy Hahn, Occupational Therapy
program; Amanda Hardy, LVN program; Andrea Stephens, AHEC and Phylis Tiffin, counselor.
In his President’s Report, Dr. Kevin Eaton, WC president, updated the trustees on the following items:
1. Recognitions:
a. John Flanagan, political science instructor in Wise County, for the completion of a Ph.D.
in Political Science from the University of North Texas.
b. Paul Stone and J.C. Colton for the success of both of their Safe Halloween events. Mr.
Colton and his Mineral Wells staff had more than 400 participants at the Mineral Wells
campus, while Chief Stone and his volunteers greeted 6,000-plus people at Roger Williams
Ballpark in Weatherford.
c. Ralph Willingham for his work with WC’s military students, veterans and their families. Once
again, WC has been identified as a “Military Friendly School” by G.I. Jobs Magazine.
The board also heard reports on the following:
1. College cash balance report, operating statements and investments for the period ending
September 30, 2011;
2. An update by Dr. Arleen Atkins on the scheduled reaffirmation visit by the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools (SACS);
3. An update on the WC Wise County construction from Duane Durrett, dean of extended
education, and
4. Announcements, including upcoming College events.
The board also met in closed session to discuss real estate and personnel matters. No action was taken.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the WC Board of Trustees is Dec. 8, 2011, 2 p.m.
