WC hosts 10th annual Math Competition

Approximately 100 students from 11 area high schools put their mathematics skills on display Friday in the 10th annual Weatherford College Coyote Area Black and Gold Math Championship. Hosted by the WC Mathematics Department, the event’s theme was “Mathematics and Technology – Shaping Our World.”

Each high school entered two teams, one in the Black Division and one in the Gold Division. Competi-
tion in the Black Division included questions from calculus, algebra, geometry, mathematical reasoning, and trigonometry. Questions for the Gold Division teams came from algebra, mathematical reasoning, and geometry.

Participating high schools included Chico, Graham, Huckabay, Lancaster, Mineral Wells, Peaster, Poolville, St. Peters Classical School, Stephenville, Weatherford, and Weatherford Christian School.

Participating students also heard a presentation entitled “Applications of Particle Accelerators in
Modern Society” by Dr. Daniel K. Marble from Tarleton State University’s Department of Physics and Engineering.

“It’s great to see so many local students interested in mathematics,” said WC’s Grace Rothrock, event chair. “It’s important to celebrate these students’ achievements and encourage them to continue in their math studies. We appreciate all of the schools and our many volunteers for their assistance.”

The event was again sponsored by Plains Capital Bank in Weatherford, and the bank’s Bob Glenn,
a WC alumnus himself, joined the group in the closing presentation.

Best-selling Author to give Tips on Studying

Weatherford College to host best-selling author Cal Newport in webcast:
"Earning straight-A’s in school doesn't require cramming and painful all-nighters," says Newport

Local students can get tips on making the grade at Weatherford College Feb. 15 as the College’s Phi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society hosts a webcast featuring Cal Newport, author of the best-selling How to Become a Straight-A Student (Broadway Books, 2006). Presenting for the 2012 Texas Regional Project “Study 30 Minutes a Day, Get a 4.0 GPA!,” Newport will reveal the unconventional tactics used by many top students to score impressive grades while spending less time studying than their lower scoring peers. With a focus on efficiency, Newport will debunk many myths, including the idea that better grades require more hours in the library, and will offer tested advice on everything from the danger of "pseudo-work" to conducting smart paper research.

The project is a regional collaboration of 25 Phi Theta Kappa chapters in Texas aimed at teaching high performance strategies used by students at Ivy League schools to students at local two-year colleges who experience difficulty in their academic pursuits.

The webcast is scheduled 1-2 p.m. in Room 201 in the Boyd Technology Building, and admission is free. Registration, however, is required for all attendees at www.study30minutesaday.com.

Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 2 million members and 1,200 chapters located in all 50 of the United States, U.S. territories, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Germany, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, United Arab Emirates and Palau.

For more information about Newport's upcoming webcast, please visit the “Study 30 Minutes a Day, Get a 4.0 GPA!” at www.study30minutesaday.com, or, locally, contact Dr. Molly Harris, Phi Chapter faculty advisor, at 817-598-6404.
