Students entering Weatherford College this summer or fall and needing remedial instruction before enrolling for regular courses can get a kick-start during the Summer Bridge Program. The free program, to be held at the College beginning early August, is designed to reduce the amount of time students must spend in remedial coursework following high school graduation. The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requires that beginning college students who have not scored 2200 on Language Arts and Math TAKS (or who do not have satisfactory SAT, ACT scores) must take an assessment test for placement into college-level courses. "The faculty and staff in Instructional Support at WC realize that too many students spend unnecessary time and money in these courses that they could bypass by reviewing before they take the assessment/placement test," said Beverly Gibbs, lab specialist. "The Summer Bridge program focuses on helping students review and expand skills on the COMPASS or alternative assessment for placement in college-level courses." Sue Coody, director of Instructional Support, said that every semester, however, at WC and indeed across the state of Texas, a significant number of students are placed into these courses based on one-shot test scores. These are often the students who put off testing until they are actually ready to register for college classes or those who test once to meet the admission requirement that test scores must be on file, and then do not re-test. "Our Summer Bridge Program is aimed at these students with the goal of encouraging them to review and re-test in areas where they need additional help," said Coody. "Our focus will be on reviewing skills needed for successful scores on the COMPASS and THEA, which are state-approved assessment tests used for placement into college-level courses." Sessions will meet Monday through Thursday, Aug. 2-19. The Math Review is scheduled 8:30 -11:30 a.m., and the Reading/Writing review will be from 1-3 p.m. Students will be required to purchase a book, The Quick Math Review, for the math portion. College readiness information will be included throughout both sessions. The sessions themselves are free; students will need to provide the $25 fee for COMPASS or $39 for the THEA on the first day of class. Since there is a great deal of difference in TAKS and COMPASS, this program will focus on helping students review and expand skills on the COMPASS or alternative assessment for placement in college-level courses.
