The Weatherford College Testing Center will hold its GED (General Educational Development) graduation ceremony Sunday, Dec. 13, 2 p.m., in the College's Alkek Fine Arts Center on the Weatherford campus, 225 College Park Drive.
Dr. Condoa Parrent will be the keynote speaker at Weatherford College's GED graduation Dec. 13. A GED success story herself, having earned her diploma in 1992 as a mother of two and then going on to achieve bachelor's, master's, as well as a doctorate in counseling from the University of North Texas, Parrent is now the vice president of student services at North Central Texas College in Gainesville.
This year, more than 200 graduates have earned the right to walk across the stage to receive their diplomas, said Lela Morris, director of the WC Testing Center. Though not all will be able to attend the Sunday afternoon ceremony, Morris is expecting at least a third of them to come with their families and friends in tow. The public is invited to attend, as well, to share the students' success. "The GED graduation ceremony is a very exciting event for the testing center," said Morris. "Obtaining a GED credential can be the first step toward entering college or career advancements for many of the graduates. Acknowledging and sharing their success is very gratifying for us, and we do our best to encourage them to continue their education at Weatherford College." The graduates will hear a keynote address by Dr. Condoa Parrent, a GED success story herself, having earned her diploma in 1992 as a mother of two and then going on to achieve bachelor's, master's, as well as a doctorate in counseling from the University of North Texas. Parrent, now the vice president of student services at North Central Texas College in Gainesville, overcame personal and financial hardships as she pursued her education and feels her story may inspire others. "I've been able to do for students as others have done for me, in helping to give them the strength, emotionally and financially, to continue their education," Parrent was quoted as saying in a recent article in her Alma Mater's alumni magazine. " "I love GED success stories, and I always try to get a speaker 'who has been in their shoes,'" said Morris. "Dr. Parrent is certainly a positive role model for us all. We are excited about hearing from her this year." This year, each graduate who attends the ceremony will receive a gift, but one lucky graduate will receive a $500 scholarship to Weatherford College. This scholarship will be given by the Weatherford College Foundation and presented by Brent Baker, vice president of Institutional Advancement. Testing has concluded for this year, but interested persons can contact the testing center at 817-598-6383 beginning January 4, 2010.
