Weatherford College President Dr. Kevin Eaton
WC President Dr. Kevin Eaton
After a closed session at the end of its regular monthly meeting Thursday, the Weatherford College Board of Trustees voted to name Dr. Kevin Eaton president of WC.

Eaton has served as interim president since July 2009 and last month was named the "sole finalist" in the presidential search as the board officially dissolved its President Search Committee. State regulations require a 21-day waiting period before an official contract could be offered.
The measure passed on a 5-0 vote. Two trustees, Trey Cobb and Jack DeShazo, were unable to attend the meeting.

After the meeting, Eaton signed a three-year contract, through December 31, 2012.

"I am honored to be given the opportunity to serve as the president of this great institution," said Eaton. "I promise to do everything I can to support all of our employees so that we can continue to move our College forward in this period of growth and change. I want our WC staff and the entire community to know that I value their opinions and that my door is always open."

Eaton has been with the College since 2002 and, before his appointment as interim president, had served as director of the Tech Prep program. (Tech Prep is a national initiative that allows students to earn tuition-free college credits for high school technical courses that have been aligned with their corresponding college courses.)

He earned his doctorate in educational administration from Texas A&M-Commerce, an MBA in management and bachelor's in accounting from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos and holds certification from the Texas Leadership Academy. Before coming to WC, Eaton, who served in the Texas Air National Guard from 1987 through May 1993, worked as a teacher and coach in the Grand Prairie ISD and served as assistant principal, as well.

In other business, the board heard several reports and took action on a number of agenda items.
In his President's Report, Eaton updated the board on several items:
  1. Enrollment for spring 2010 as of Jan. 14: 5,087, a 13 percent increase or 573 more students over same time last year, and an increase of 14.7 percent in contact hours.
  2. WC Wise County facility's move to a temporary location in Decatur was successful, and plans are proceeding to begin hiring architects and contractors to begin construction of the new Wise County campus;
  3. Eaton and Martin recently met with administrators from Texas A&M, who expressed an interest in providing personnel support and planning expertise with WC construction projects and in the expansion of partnerships in four-year bachelor's programming to be offered at WC through A&M; and
  4. Several faculty and staff were recognized, included Steve Malley, department chair of public safety programs, and Greg Martin, coordinator of emergency medical service professions, whose program graduates experienced high pass rates on recent state licensure exams - 97 percent and 95 percent, respectively; and members of the athletic department staff and student athletes for their community service and performance accomplishments and academic achievements.
Additionally, the board:
  1. Authorized the creation of a Compass Bank account for donations;
  2. Heard reports on the following:
    1. Building and infrastructure upgrades;
    2. Progress toward preparation of the Compliance Certification and other requirements for SACS reaffirmation of accreditation;
