WC Board of Trustees and key College administrators participated in comprehensive training on the responsibilities, tasks, mission and goals of an effective community college governing board.
Members of the Weatherford College Board of Trustees and key College administrators recently participated in comprehensive training on the responsibilities, tasks, mission and goals of an effective community college governing board.
Facilitated by Dr. Luther (Bud) Joyner, formerly the president of Amarillo College and currently a partner in Executive Resource Consulting Service, the workshop targeted specific responsibilities of a community college board, including statutory authority and responsibility. Additionally, an emphasis was placed on the importance of trust, mutual respect, communications and knowledge among individual trustees, as well as the importance of representing all constituents and supporting the authority of the board as a whole.
“The training that Mr. Joyner provided to the board and staff, as well as information based on his experience, was superb,” said Frank Martin, WC Board of Trustees chair. “He facilitated questions and discussion that are pertinent to the issues currently facing the board. The current team of the board and College staff continue to bond together more every week.”
Joel Watson, vice chair, echoed Martin’s assessment of the training session.
“It was an excellent session, and I think we all took away some valuable information,” Watson said. “What I particularly liked was the realization that the board is, indeed, progressing as we should, and we’re heading in the right direction. Now, I have even greater confidence that we are all moving forward with shared goals and greater understanding of our responsibilities toward the College and our community that we serve.”
The next meeting of the WC Board of Trustees is Thursday, Oct. 8. For information about the agenda and the location and time, visit the College Web site at www.wc.edu.
