This synopsis is intended as a brief overview of some actions taken by the Weatherford College Board of Trustees at its regular meeting in October and is for general informational purposes only. This abbreviated summary is not intended to represent or reflect all discussion and action taken by the board at this meeting. Specific details outlining all action taken by the board are recorded in the official Board Meeting Minutes, prepared and maintained by the College President's Office.

In its regular monthly meeting Thursday, the Weatherford College Board of Trustees approved a memorandum of understanding between WC and Wise County regarding a new Wise County branch campus. The facility, to be located between Decatur and Bridgeport, will be funded by a five-cent branch campus maintenance tax levied on Wise County taxpayers. The agreement facilitates the partnership between the College and Wise County.

The county has finalized the purchase of the property and will begin working on the design of the new campus, with the input from WC officials, in the near future.
In his report to the board, Dr. Kevin Eaton, interim president:

  • introduced to the trustees the newly elected Student Government officers and their advisor Mr. Doug Jefferson, director of student life;
  • recognized Lori Gouge, geology instructor, for having been selected as one of only 60 teachers from across the nation to participate in the National Geographic workshop "Share Your Vision;
  • recognized Fine Arts & Communication Department Chair Cal Lewiston for his outstanding work in coordination with the Performing Arts Association of Weatherford;
  • recognized the staff of Office of Institutional Advancement, Creative & Graphics Services and Communications & PR for the outstanding development and design of the fall issue of The Hilltop newsletter;
  • congratulated EMT Instructors Kyle Chambers and Donna Hargrove for a combined 90 percent pass rate on the first round of National Registry Testing, 22 percent higher than the national test average; and
  • reported on the event held last Saturday at the Alkek Fine Arts Center recognizing 144 Texas Army National Guard soldiers about to be deployed to Iraq.
Additionally, the board:
  1. Appointed Eaton to represent the College on the Weatherford Economic Development Authority Board of Directors;
  2. Appointed Frank Martin and Joel Watson, board chair and vice chair, respectively, to serve on the Southern Association of College and Schools Steering Committee to facilitate communication and oversight of campus SACS reaffirmation activities and progress;
  3. Appointed Trustee Elaine Carter as liaison to the WC Foundation Board of Directors;
  4. Tabled an item regarding the Faculty Senate, pending further review;
  5. Discussed and agreed to the expenditure of $8,932 for the purchase of seven laptop computers for members of the board;
  6. Met in closed session to discuss personnel matters, and the board chair announced afterwards that the matters have been "resolved to the satisfaction of all parties involved," pending a final legal review;
  7. Heard reports on the following:
    1. Building and infrastructure upgrades;
    2. Cash balance as of August 31, 2009: $23,398,232.40; revenues: $39,432,469 and expenditures: $34,381,730;
    3. SACS Reaffirmation of Accreditation, steering committee structure and timeline;
    4. Status of all current WC grants and the prospects for future grants, and
    5. Announcements, including upcoming College events.
