WC Board approves new program, contracts for softball field maintenance
In its regular monthly meeting Thursday, the Weatherford College Board of Trustees approved the addition of a new associate degree program to train physical therapy assistants (PTA). The new program is a two-year, 70-semester-hour curriculum consisting of classroom, laboratory and clinical learning experiences, designed to prepare graduates to work under the supervision of licensed physical therapists and provide rehabilitation training. It will begin in the fall of 2013, and will be funded by WC federal Title III grant.
“We anticipate great interest in this program, and enrollment to be strong,” said Dr. Richard Bowers, vice president of instruction and student services.
Also, the board approved an addition to the contract with Johnson Controls to provide maintenance for the new softball complex.
Additionally, the board:
1. Approved a change order to the completed roofing and mansard roof project, reflecting a $115,000 credit from Imperial Construction, representing owner allowances in the original contract that were not used;
2. Heard reports from representatives from Hill and Wilkerson and Imperial Construction firms on the current and recently completed construction projects;
3. Heard a report from Vice President Andra Cantrell on the College cash balance, operating statements and investments for the period ending Dec. 31, 2011;
4. Heard an enrollment update from Executive Dean of Student Services Kathy Bassham: 5,183 overall, an 1.3 percent decrease from last spring, which is trending with other Texas community colleges this semester;
5. Heard a report from the Tuition and Fees Committee recommending an increase in GED testing fees as set by the state of Texas and a few miscellaneous non-instructional-incidental fees; no increase in tuition or continuing education and distance education; and
6. Heard a list of upcoming College events and activities.
In his President’s Report, Dr. Kevin Eaton, WC president, updated the trustees on the following items:
1. Recognitions: a. Coach Bob McKinley for reaching the 800-win milestone Saturday, the 4th of February, by sweeping both games against Temple College. b. Nancy McVean for being selected the College Teacher of the Year by the Texas Educational Theatre Association. c. The Weatherford College Math Department for the outstanding work they did with the 10th Annual Math Competition. More than 100 area high school mathematicians participated in this year’s event. d. Everyone who participated in the Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening of WC’s new softball facility on Saturday, the 28th of January. A standing-room-only crowd was rewarded with two outstanding softball games that both came down to the last at-bat, with WC prevailing in both games.
2. Retirements: a. Brenda Durant, Technology Department, and b. Kay Meredith, Developmental Reading instructor.
The board also met in closed session to discuss real estate and personnel matters; no action was taken.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the WC Board of Trustees is March 8, 2012.
The mission of Weatherford College is to provide effective learning opportunities that enrich the lives of its students and the communities it serves.
